Episode 266 – Christian Privilege

This week we’re joined by Erin Riley and Jason Ward and we talk about Christian privilege, dead kids, Russia, and other news. Trust me, it’s not all depressing and I will try lightening it up next time.

Dustin’ off the Degree – Catching up on some vaccine news

37 dead as measles cases spike in Europe
http://bit.ly/an266-measles_europe

In the first half of this year there were more than 41,000 measles cases in Europe, with 37 of those cases being fatal. In all of 2017 there were fewer than 24,000 and 2016 only saw 5273.

More than half of this years cases have been in Ukraine where there is an ongoing Russian backed civil war, but France, Georgia, Greece, Italy, Russia, and Serbia have each had more than 1000 cases.

It’s worth noting that after the eradication of smallpox, the WHO started the working on eradicating polio, which was almost successful before the Islamic antivax movement started and measles was supposed to be next. Polio was supposed to be gone in 1990 and measles in 2000.

Doctors are furious at Italy’s populist government for approving a dangerous anti-vax law
http://bit.ly/an266-italy

Last year Italy passed legislation that would make vaccination against measles and nine other pathogens after a particularly bad outbreak last year that resulted in more than 5000 cases of measles with four dead children. In June a new populist government took power that believes that the 10 vaccine requirement is unnecessary and dangerous and the Italian senate passed a bill to delay implementation by a year to give them time to craft a full repeal with the goal being to craft repeal that would find a quote “balance between the right to education and the right to health”.

Turkey mulls bill on jailing parents up to 2 years for refusing to vaccinate children
http://bit.ly/an266-turkey

Turkey has its own anti-vax movement and the deputy chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party has introduced what would be the strongest vaccination law to date. If it passes parents who refuse to vaccinate their children would face a minimum prison sentence of six months and a maximum of two years.

Russian trolls are using social media to turn people against vaccines
http://bit.ly/an266-russia-vax

Researchers at George Washington University conducted a study to find ways to improve communication about vaccines on social media. What they found was that Russian bots and trolls, largely driven by the Glavsat organization have been systematically working to polarize the debate, especially on the anti-vax side. They found that parents talked about parental rights, but the Russians politicized it with terms like freedom and constitutional rights.

Online Jokes Are No Laughing Matter in Russia
http://bit.ly/an266-russia-meme

Daniil Markin is a 19 year old film student in Russia who has now been charged extremist crimes over saving memes that mock Christianity on a Russian social media platform. One of them portrays Game of Thrones actor Jon Snow as Jesus with “Jon Snow is risen! Truly he is risen!”. Another one had a sick figure with a halo and a line crossed through it that read “There Is No God”.

Bishop Morlino’s abuse response showcases the church’s true problem
http://bit.ly/an266-bishop

Bishop Robert Morlino of the Diocese of Madison in Wisconsin wrote to his church members:

“Until recently, the problems of the church have been painted purely as problems of pedophilia, this despite clear evidence to the contrary. There is a homosexual subculture within the hierarchy of the Catholic Church that is wreaking great devastation in the vineyard of the Lord.”

Irish PM: time to move Catholic church from center of society
http://bit.ly/an266-ireland

The Irish Prime Minister is calling for a change between the relationship between Ireland and the Catholic church. He’s not calling for a full separation of church and state, but he is wanting religion to no longer be at the center of society.

He suggested this while the pope was visiting.

National poll: 61 percent of Mormons approve of President Donald Trump
http://bit.ly/an266-mormons

Members of the church formerly known as Mormons, not to be confused with former Mormons, support Trump more than any other religious group in America. They give him a full 61% job approval rating which even beats out white, non-Hispanic Protestants which back him at 60%.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the permanent injunction against Alabama’s law that would ban all dilation and evacuation abortions.

32-year-long Australian study reveals steep decline in student belief that God created humans
http://bit.ly/an266-australia

There has been a study going for 32 years in Australia about university student beliefs about God’s involvement in human evolution. They have found that belief that God was the creator or drove the evolution of humans has dropped from 60% to 29% and the belief that there was no god behind human evolution has risen from 25% to 62%

Episode 264 – Don’t Indulge your Privilege

Dustin’ off the Degree – Indulgences

NEWS

Catholic school puts counselor on leave over same-sex marriage
http://bit.ly/an264-counselor

Shelly Fitzgerald married her then partner of 18 years in 2014 and has worked as a counselor for Roncalli High School in Indianapolis for 15 years. Someone learned of her marriage, got a copy of the marriage license, a public record, and sent it to the school administrators who ran it up the chain of command and she’s been placed on administrative leave pending her resignation or the end of her contract since she refused the option of dissolving the marriage.

At issue here are the following facts:

    1. Roncalli High School is a Catholic school.
    2. The school receives vouchers, in other words it’s publicly funded.
    3. Indiana’s religious freedom law was amended to not allow discrimination.

‘In God We Trust’ now must be displayed in all Florida schools, school buildings
http://bit.ly/an264-motto

Just like we talked about two weeks ago for Kentucky, Florida is also requiring that all schools display “In God We Trust” in a conspicuous place. St. Lucie Public Schools gave all schools a poster to put in their front offices. Palm Beach County School District emailed principles two signs and asked them to print and post one. Okeechobee County schools were each given a state seal, which includes the required text and have been directed to put it “in a prominent spot on each campus”. Interestingly displaying the Florida state flag would also comply.

MRFF files complaint against US Air Force General
http://bit.ly/264-mrff

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation has sent Secretary of Defense, US Air Force Leadership, and the command at Edwards Air Force Base a 22 page letter detailing the issues they have found with Brig Gen E. John Teichert after receiving 41 complaints and conducting an investigation of the ministry he runs.

Of concern is his evangelical dominionist agenda that he pushes in a way that is allegedly unbecoming an officer and creates serious establishment clause issues and the way that he treats atheists, agnostics, Muslims, Hindus, and Mormons under his command, which is illegal discrimination.

Saudi Arabia Orders 16,000 Students to Leave Canada Amid Escalating Clash
http://bit.ly/an264-saudi1
http://bit.ly/an264-saudi2

On August 5 the Government of Canada called for the release of blogger Raif Badawi and his sister Samar, via tweet, for obvious human rights concerns. In response the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia declared the Canadian Ambassador persona non grata, recalled their own ambassador to Canada, orders all 16,000 Saudi students in Canada to find new countries to study in, canceled all flights between Saudi Arabia and Canada, and suspended investment activity in Canada. They are still selling oil to Canada.

Saudi Arabia crucified man in Mecca while calling out Canada human rights
http://bit.ly/an264-saudi3

Saudi Arabia has also been going on the offense against Canada’s horrific human rights record, especially with their treatment of women. On their official Twitter account they retweeted a picture someone made of an airliner about to fly into the CN Tower. But their strongest show of moral superiority yet, they crucified a man in Mecca. Normally crucifixion is reserved for only the most heinous of crimes, homosexuality and attending government protests, but in this man’s case he was merely guilty of murder, theft, and attempted rape.

Denmark imposes first veil ban fine on woman
http://bit.ly/an264-denmark

Danish police were called to a shopping mall over a fight between two women. One of the women was wearing a veil, the other was not and the former’s veil fell off during the fight. The police fined both women for public disorder and also fined the one woman for wearing a face veil in public.

The fine was for 1000 kroner, or about $155.

English law applies to Islamic marriage, judge rules in divorce case
http://bit.ly/an264-sharia

Breaking with precedent a High Court judge in London ruled that sharia marriages do fall England’s 1973 Matrimonial Causes Act. He then ruled that the marriage was void because it was “entered into in disregard of certain requirements as to the formation of marriage. It is therefore a void marriage and the wife is entitled to a decree of nullity.”

It is estimated that at least 2/3rds of Muslim women in the UK have had a religious marriage only without completing the civil marriage. This is then used by their husbands to keep them in the Sharia courts and out of the civil courts.

Episode 263 – News is the new Asceticism

Dustin’ off the Degree – Asceticism

noun – severe self-discipline and avoidance of all forms of indulgence, typically for religious reasons.: “acts of physical asceticism”.

In modern days you’ll mostly find asceticism practiced publicly in India, but it has a long history in Christianity as well.

Some of the early church fathers got into it and the gnostics really got into it. It is rooted it metaphysical dualism. Your spirit is good because of God’s grace, for mainstream Christianity at that time, or because you have the secret knowledge for the Gnostics, but the flesh is evil. The lowest levels are denying the flesh something, taking the form of fasting or abstaining from eating meat, drinking alcohol, or having sex for a while, or permanently abstaining in some of the more extreme cases. Next up is self-flagellation where you literally beat yourself with whips, which in the extreme cases may have glass shards, stones, or sharp metal embedded in them to tear the flesh. The final level, which is now almost exclusively found in India is exposure to the elements where you might spend months or even years sitting naked on top of a pole exposed to the sun, rain, wind, and cold. With in Christianity this was most common in Palestine and Egypt in the 2nd and 3rd century CE.

Hindu ascetics will even go as far as to permanently disable themselves, often through immobilizing a joint until it calcifies and is permanently immobile, and Hindu asceticism is practiced with the aim of paying for bad karma.

Back to Early Christian asceticism, it was common to some extent with the early Church fathers, especially Origen, but was really popular with Gnosticism. There were two main branches of Gnostics, the Libertine Gnostics and the Ascetic Gnostics. Both groups believed that the spirit was pure and the physical form was evil. Libertine Gnostics used this separation of the two to indulge the flesh through feasts and orgies, they never became a large group and were on the verge of dying out on their own. The Ascetic Gnosticism practiced extreme asceticism and strove to always abstain from sex, alcohol, meat, and anything else that might indulge the flesh. This group was so popular and growing so fast that the church had to get the Roman Empire involved in forcing them to go mainstream or die. Most merged back in with the church and with that strengthened the ascetic tendencies that you will still find in the Catholic and Orthodox churches.

In 2016 a boy ran away from Blessed Hope Boys Academy claiming to have been punished with forced exercise, solitary confinement, and having food withheld. The police raided the facility and Pastor Gary Wiggins, who ran it moved to Missouri where he remained until the authorities started looking into his new ministry, so he moved again in May, this time to Texas, where now eight boys, ages 10 – 17, have been removed after claims of abuse, fraud, and human trafficking, including that he was using the boys for his moving and lawn care businesses without pay.

Presumably this third gay conversion camp is now closed, but Pastor Gary Wiggins has still not been charged with any crimes.

Episode 262 – Mystical Conspiracies

Mikey Pullman is back and we talk about mysticism, conspiracies, and Christian nationalism.

Stepping Stones is raising money for back to school backpacks for impoverished kids.
https://www.facebook.com/Stepping.Stones.Boise1

Dustin’ off the Degree – Mysticism

The term “mysticism” has been around since at least Classical Greece, but the practice definitely dates back much earlier and I would suspect it predates religion itself. Historically it’s definition has shifted and in modern times it’s controversial, but generally speaking mysticism is finding oneness with the divine or absolute through altered states of mind. In some cases this is called enlightenment.

You’ll find mystics in virtually all religions. In Islam it’s most commonly found in Sufism, in Judaism it’s Kabbalah and Merkabah, in Christianity it’s Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodox, and Pentecostals, in Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism it’s called enlightenment. When you get to a lot of the New Age religions, then mysticism is basically the core.

How people attain these altered states varies and fasting is probably the most common, which we talked about in length a few weeks ago, but other forms of acetic practice, especially extreme exposure to heat, cold, or sun can be sufficient. Meditation in the Eastern religions has the goal of enlightenment, which is mystic. Some traditional religions, such as Native American religions, and many of the New Age religions will use “plant medicine”, more commonly referred to as psychedelics like peyote or ayahuasca. Music and prayer can be enough to change mind states, such as in the case of Pentecostals. The mind states for mystical experiences can also be created by mental illness or brain damage, such as in the case of Ellen White.

Protestant Christianity, Sunni and Shiite Muslims, and Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Judaism are generally very skeptical of mysticism, despite every prophet they revere having been inherently a mystic.

I actually think mysticism is the strongest argument for religion, since there is something that is actually going on in the brain that can be measured and the events of mystical experiences are very real to the people experiencing them. However, if this were actually good evidence, then I would have to lean toward God not being a being or force, but drugs.

‘Atheist PM’ to blame for deadly fires, says Greek bishop

Greece has been enduring horrific and very deadly wildfires and despite the cause being well known to be arson, Bishop Amvrosios of the Greek Orthodox Church knows the real reason:

“Atheist Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras draws the wrath of God. The atheists of SYRIZA are the causes of the general disaster! Their atheism, draws the wrath of God!”

Just about everyone in Greece disagrees, including the Archbishopric of Athens which said that was just his personal opinion.

9th Circuit Court panel rejects prayer at Chino Valley school board meetings
http://bit.ly/an262-chino

A three judge panel of the US 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the injunction against the Chino Valley Unified School District in California for their prayers, Bible readings, and various proselytizing. The district claimed that this was protected by the exception for traditional prayers in legislative bodies. The court rejected that claim saying,

“These prayers typically take place before groups of schoolchildren whose attendance is not truly voluntary and whose relationship to school district officials, including the board, is not one of full parity.”

Lesbian couple denied housing in Sunset Hills senior living community, lawsuit claims
http://bit.ly/an262-lawsuit

A senior community in St Louis has denied allowing a lesbian couple who are married and have been together or nearly 40 years to move in citing their policy that only allows married people to cohabitate and their policy which defines marriage as:

“The union of one man and one woman, as marriage is understood in the Bible”

They had selected this community because it’s the only place in the area that can provide that level of care, and does it at no extra cost and they went through many tours and conversations with the staff, and paid a $2000 deposit.

The couple is suing claiming that the denial violates the Fair Housing Act and Missouri Human Rights Act. Friendship Village hasn’t responded yet, but odds are they will claim that as a senior community founded on religious values they are entitled to sincerely held religious beliefs.

State Department retroactively revoking passports from transgender women
http://bit.ly/an262-passport

Danni Askini is a trans activist based out of Seattle and transitioned at the age of 16 in 1998 with sealed court records while she was a warde of the state. She found that she needed to leave Seattle and spend some time in Sweden because of getting a bunch of death threats by nazis in Seattle. Unfortunately she needed to renew her passport and the application was rejected because she had failed to disclose she was transgender. She got her representative involved and the state department issued a 2 year temporary passport and she is now safely in Sweden.

Janus Rose is a technology researcher who got her passport updated with the legal name and gender marker changed in November. Then she got a call last week telling her that the government made a mistake in updating her gender marker because the medical documentation was invalid.

Why? It was signed by a nurse practitioner, not an MD, despite the fact that this has never been a problem before for any patient at her clinic.

Ultra-Orthodox men again hold up plane, refusing to sit beside women

For the second time in as many weeks Ultra-Orthodox men held up a flight. This was an Austrian Airlines flight that 26 men were moved to after their original flight was canceled, so yes, it was full. Each of the men refused to be seated next to a woman and eventually the pilot had to get involved and convince the women to change seats so the flight could take off only 40 minutes late.

After the previous incident on an El Al flight that airline decided that any passengers refusing to be seated would be removed from the plane and an Israeli court has also recently ruled that women cannot be forced to change seats.

A Californian man temporarily staying at an apartment complex in Boise was asked to leave on Friday. Saturday he returned with a knife and started stabbing people at a three year old’s birthday party wounding six children and the adults, all our most of whom are refugees from Muslim majority countries. The birthday girl’s injuries were severe enough to require being sent to Salt Lake City and she has not passed away.

France arrests 10 far-Right suspects over alleged plot to attack Muslims, say prosecutors

On Saturday anti-terrorist police, acting on information from France’s intelligence service arrested 10 would be terrorists, all linked to the far-Right, who were trying to stockpile weapons to use in attacks against Muslims.

French priest suspended after video of him slapping baby goes viral

You’ve probably seen the video by now, it’s an elderly Catholic priest trying to calm a crying baby that he’s supposed to baptize. When the normal soothing doesn’t work he slapped the baby across the face twice. It took both parents to force their child out of the priest’s arms.

In response to this the diocese in France that the 89 year old priest worked in has suspended him. He will specifically not be allowed to conduct baptisms, weddings, or mass until further notice. Of course they also had to explain this as “this loss of self control can be attributed to the fatigue of an elderly priest, but that doesn’t excuse it.”

South African court rules religion can’t be a defense for anti-gay hate speech

A pastor in South Africa had a complaint filed against him by the South African Human Rights Commission in 2013 for anti-LGBT hate speech. In arbitration the next year he agreed to not make statements blaming gays and lesbians for social problems or diseases, advocate hate, call for their remove from society, or advocate harmful behavior against them. He also agreed to not go beyond what the Bible says.

He then continued to advocate for gays and lesbians to be locked up in cages, blame them for pedophilia, suggest that ISIS should come rid South Africa of the homosexual curse, and more.

In response the Equality Court has held him in contempt ruling that his religious beliefs do not justify hate speech. Since he’s promised to be good they’ve suspended his sentence, but if he makes one more comment he’s going straight to jail.

Ivanka Trump Puts Her Money Where Her Mouth Is – by Donating $50,000 to Anti-LGBT Church

Ivanka Trump has made a $50,000 donation to Pastor Jack Graham of Prestonwood Baptist Church. Graham is a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, member of Trump’s Religious Advisory Council, and a bigot who has worked hard to fight gay rights.

SCOTUS rules in Trump’s favor on Muslim ban

The US Supreme Court has ruled 5-4 that Trump’s ban on travel to the United States for nationals of the predominantly Muslim countries of Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria, and Yemen to be within the powers of the president. Additionally Cheif Justice Roberts wrote:

“The Proclamation is expressly premised on legitimate purposes: preventing entry of nationals who cannot be adequately vetted and inducing other nations to improve their practices. The text says nothing about religion.”

Justice Kennedy to retire; Trump can cement court’s conservative majority

Effective July 31st Justice Anthony Kennedy will be retiring from the Supreme Court. Kennedy has been the court’s swing vote tending to side with the liberals on civil rights issues, including gay rights. Our new swing vote will be Chief Justice John Roberts, so basically we’re all fucked.
